Named for commander William Lewis Herndon, what was once a small town has grown into a bustling suburban area with a population of 24,581 people as of 2020. When it was first founded, Herndon grew in popularity through dairy farming, and its help with the Alexandria, Loudoun, and Hampshire Railroad (Now it is the Washington and Old Dominion (W&OD) Railroad, a trail for biking, running, walking, etc.). Just 22 miles outside of DC, Herndon offers the best of both worlds, a small-town feel with proximity to the city.
